Sports medicine
Sports medicine examines the influence of exercise, training and sports to include the typical sport injuries as well as lack of exercise on healthy and unhealthy people.
Before starting a regulated physical fitness programme, it is advisable to have a fundamental and extensive medical examination done. This should be done not only to determine your current physical condition and your ability to actually do sports, but also to work out recommendations or a training plan for a specific sport activity(-ies). During the physical fitness programme, medical examinations are important to determine functional deficiencies, illnesses and injuries early on or to even prevent them.
The educational qualifications to become a sports doctor in Austria (a special diploma certificate of the Austrian Chamber of Physicians) encompass finishing a Doctor of General Medicine programme or a Medical Specialist in a specialized area programme. The diploma programme facilitates the fundamental scientific knowledge of sports medical physician tasks, which are provided in a number of courses. 180 hours of course requirements must be completed within a three-year period.
